What started as an appreciation party for our clients at Trace Productions and TexasB-roll is now expanding to become a unique, public event in support of the local freelance film, video and media communities. The 2007 event is "celebrating improvisation in comedy and the blues." You see, I have been in and out of the music business for 25 years as a singer, lyricist, sound engineer, promoter in addition to my “real job” as a Writer / Producer / Director of Photography.
In the past few years I’ve attempted to meld those flipped sides of me with the professional career parts. The result has been the incredible experience of doing some shows as the band Trace Elements, with some amazing area freelance musicians.
Flashing back to late ‘70’s, when I was in high school near San Antonio, my buddy Les McGehee was sort of the class clown, whose many antics both onstage and off form some of my best memories of that time, and have become legendary tales in Bulverde and Canyon Lake Texas! He was someone who I remember thinking would be (or should be) famous for sure before I would do squat in life. Well, many adventures pursued, and yes Les is famous now (sort of), a few decades and a million stories later.
His accomplishments in Austin and all over the world are well documented at www.lesmcgehee.com so check it out. His new book “Les McGehee Plays Well With Others: A "Grown-Up" Handbook of Improvisation and Play” published by Dalton is getting rave reviews and has been selected as recommended reading for graduate students at University of Texas at Austin.
Now, finally, we get to do a show together, a little dream come true, and destined to be a good time!
Les and part of his Austin based comedy troupe will do a show of improvisational comedy based on audience input. These shows are a fantastic extension of his persona in his book, and rolling-in-the-floor funny. He’ll also sign copies of the book, if you ask him real nice.
Then we’ll take the stage as Trace Elements, delivering Texas Rock and Blues …with a Groove. There will be special guests coming to sit in with the band and chances are good that Les, who also sings, and plays piano and guitar, will jam too! Find out more about the band at:

Additionally, there will be invited guest speakers throughout the evening from area film and video related organizations to speak on the state of the industry in Dallas, and in Texas as a whole.

The Mardi Gras Café is an excellent venue for the event, with great Cajun food, plenty of well lit parking and friendly staff. It’s a New Orleans style bar and restaurant at the base of the Stemmons Tower buildings. This place is a hidden treasure in Dallas, easy to get to, but with little signage. Once you’ve been there, you’ll never forget, and wonder how you didn’t know it was there. They are also very supportive of good live music in Dallas, and a great intimate place to see a band.
